DOPO YUMEmories
Jordan Gallard / United States (Opera prima - World Premiere - 2022 - 13’36’’ - VOSE)
This short documentary tells the story of Dopo Yume, a NYC-based rock band whose origins sprung from an unlikely group of friends in the mid-1990s. Told through home videos and present day narration from the band’s lead singer, we experience his memories of the highs and lows, the friendships and community that formed around the music and the role that fate and tragedy played. When a teenage Fashion Model, Kat Gould, introduced 15-year-old Jordan Galland to a cabal of cool musicians in their 20s, Jordan had no idea that these would become his collaborators for the next two decades. At the time the age gap between Jordan and his new pals kept him from fully immersing himself their world. Inspired by this intriguing circle of artists, Jordan formed a band with two high school classmates who played just one show of original songs before being invited on tour to open up for Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainright, who were both promoting their debut albums. When two of the band mates left New York for college, while Jordan stayed to attend NYU, he continued to perform under the name “Dopo Yume” recruiting new musicians. He could now enlist the help of the musicians he had originally formed a deep connection with, who were a few years older and much more experienced: David Mueller, Timo Ellis and Sean Lennon, who he had bonded with on tour. The band changed many members over the years, counting among its ranks notable artists and musicians from Cibo Matto, Rooney, including Lissy Trullie, Brendan Fowler, Adam Crystal and Pamela Stickney. Dopo Yume gained a lot of traction in the late 90s, early 00s, opening for bands like Ween, Phantom Planet and OK Go!, appearing in major publications like the New York Times, Interview Mag, and W Mag, having their name referenced in movies starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, and casting Bijou Phillips in their music video. But the band never quite took flight. When Kat Gould, the friend who had introduced Jordan to his future band-mates, tragically died at the age of 26, the stress and strain had become too much and the band fell apart. Many of Dopo Yume’s songs had a second life with singer Domino Kirke and producer Mark Ronson, such as “Everyone Else is Boring,” which Jordan wrote as a tribute to Kat. This film is part self-portrait, part in-depth look at the songwriting process, and part nostalgic love letter to bygone times and long lost friendships.
