Carlos F. Heredero

Film historian and critic. Editor of Caimán Cuadernos de Cine magazine (previously Cahiers du cinéma. España) since its foundation in 2007. Lecturer in Spanish film history at ECAM (Madrid) from 1995 to the present. He also publishes film criticism in El Cultural (El Mundo newspaper) and works on a regular basis with the TVE programme Historia de nuestro cine [History of Our Film] (La 2). He was the principal critic for Diario 16 newspaper for fourteen years (1988-2001) and wrote for the magazines Cinema 2002 (1976-1980), Viridiana (1992/1997), Dirigido por (1986/2007), Cinemanía (1995-2005) and Nosferatu. He has also worked as a lecturer in Spanish film history at ESCAC (Barcelona, 2001-2010) and as director of summer film courses at the University of the Basque Country (1997-2004). He advised SECC, the state cultural commemoration organisation, on film activities for the fourth centenary of Don Quijote de la Mancha and was coordinator and curator of the international congress on cinema and Don Quijote (Valencia, October 2005). He has also been a member of the group of scriptwriters for the TVE programme Versión española [Spanish Version]. In 1995 he won the Sant Jordi film award for the books El lenguaje de la luz. Entrevistas con directores de fotografía del cine español [The Language of Light: Interviews with Spanish Film Photography Directors] and Las huellas del tiempo. Cine español 1951-1961 [The Imprints of Time: Spanish Film 1951-1961]. He scripted four documentaries produced by Canal Plus and made by Carlos Rodríguez: Huellas de un espíritu [Imprints of a Spirit] (1998), Alfred Hitchcock: la ficción sin límites [Alfred Hitchcock: Fiction Without Limits] (1999), Orson Welles en el país de Don Quijote [Orson Welles in the Land of Don Quijote] (2000; together with E. Riambau) and Huston y Joyce. Diálogos con los muertos [Huston and Jorce: Dialogues with the Dead](2001). He has published numerous books on foreign directors (Sam Peckinpah, John Huston, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, John Cassavetes, Bong Joon-ho, Francis Ford Coppola and Eric Rohmer, the latter together with Antonio Santamarina), several others on Spanish film-makers (José Luis Borau, Iván Zulueta, Pedro Beltrán and Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón) and the volumes La pesadilla roja del general Franco [General Franco’s Red Nightmare] (1996), Espejo de miradas. Entrevistas con nuevos directores del cine español [Mirror of Gazes: Interviews with New Spanish Film Directors] (1997), 20 nuevos directores del cine español [20 New Spanish Film Directors] (1999) and Semillas de futuro. Cine español 1990-2001 [Seeds of the Future: Spanish Film 1990-2001] (2002), as well as El cine negro. Maduración y crisis de la escritura clásica [Film Noir: Maturity and Crisis in Classic Writing] (1996; also with Antonio Santamarina). He sat on the editorial committee of the Diccionario del Cine Español [Dictionary of Spanish Film] (1998), published by Cátedra and the Academia Española de Cine, and the management committee of the Historia General del Cine [General History of Film] (12 volumes / pub. Cátedra, 1995). He directed – for the Filmoteca Española – the national catalogue of specialist film publications (the REC database) and was also the editor, together with Eduardo Rodríguez and Iván Giroud, of the Diccionario de Cine Español e Iberoamericano [Dictionary of Spanish and Latin American Film] (10 volumes, 2011/2012), published by the Fundación Autor (SGAE). He also wrote, together with Antonio Santamarina, La biblioteca del cine español [The Library of Spanish Film] (Cátedra; Madrid, 2010), which contains a catalogue of all the literary sources (Spanish, Latin American and foreign) of Spanish film.
