Amy Berg draws a line under the uncertainty, with a complete piece on the iconic singer. Janis: Little Girl Blue hinges on a triangle of consistent research, live archive footage and intimate documents that reveal a unique family history: that of the ambitious, rebellious waitress that fled her home turf to chase fortune. This film is meticulous in its interviews (some of which are seen for the first time here); the artist's younger siblings, her numerous lovers – who candidly describe Janis' sexual experimentation – and of course, the members of Big Brother & The Holding Company, the band that embraced her blues. Janis includes plenty of music, but highlights the woman that sang it with affection and depth, and without the slightest morbidity. An honorable tribute that looks, sounds and feels definitive.
