In Ourense one of the oldest forms of carnival is celebrated every year. Over several days, folións, corredoiros and baixadas are celebrated with felos, cigarróns, pantallas and peliqueiros, characters who wear spectacular costumes, including colorful masks and a belt from which hang large and loud cowbells, and who run through the town hitting visitors with their whips. Another tradition is the farrapada, a battle in which participants throw rolled up rags smeared with mud at each other. An anarchic war is also fought in which flour and ants are thrown at the participants, while a huge hymenoptera rises defiantly above the crowd.
