In music documentary history, it’s not uncommon to find that the relationship between musicians and filmmakers has experienced friction when deciding how to channel the story. The Rolling Stones with Jean-Luc Godard or Robert Frank; Fugazi and Jem Cohen; Anton Newcombe and Ondi Timoner... The struggles between conflicting egos and personalities often characterises the way the film is constructed and, very particularly, the way it reaches the spectator, once edited. To whom does the ultimate authorship of a rockumentary belong? To what extent do certain stars prefer to work with directors capable of giving in to their ideology? How does a filmmaker use the powerful musical material they work with to articulate a personal discourse extending beyond the merely explanatory point of view?
